Forum Question: Seeking Advice for Caring for Elderly Parents in NYC
Hi everyone,
I’m reaching out to hear from others who might have similar experiences or insights. My mother, who lives in NYC, has become completely immobile after a series of falls and has dementia that’s getting worse. Her health has really declined, and she needs a lot of care—probably around the clock. My father is also aging and unable to provide the level of assistance she really needs, but he's very resistant to options like 24-hour in-home care or a nursing home.
I’m feeling overwhelmed and unsure about the best options available. I’ve looked into home health care services, private and state nursing homes, but I have a lot of questions and concerns. I’m wondering if anyone has experience with these choices. Specifically, I’m hoping to learn:
- Are there safe, reputable home health care services that offer the high level of care my mom needs?
- What are the pros and cons of private versus state-run nursing homes?
- How well does Medicare or Medicaid cover these types of care, especially if 24-hour assistance is needed?
- Has anyone faced similar resistance from a parent about accepting more intensive care?
Hearing others’ stories, advice, and any resources you’ve found helpful would mean so much to me. Thank you in advance for your guidance—I know this is a journey that many people navigate, and I could use all the support I can get.
