My Hilarious Journey to Becoming a DIY Hairstylist

The Ups, Downs, and Snips

You know that feeling when you look in the mirror, and your hair just needs something new? Maybe a fresh style, maybe a trim? That’s where I was one evening. Feeling spontaneous (and maybe a bit overconfident), I grabbed my scissors and decided to give myself a fresh, new look. Who needs a professional anyway, right? Little did I know I was about to enter the wild world of DIY haircuts… with some hilarious results!

The Prep Stage: YouTube Made It Look So Easy

I began my adventure with a solid two hours of YouTube tutorials. I watched video after video of people effortlessly transforming their hair, looking chic and professional in the end. “I’ve got this!” I thought. My bathroom became my salon, the mirror was my client, and I was ready to work some magic.

Then reality hit. For starters, the hand-mirror positioning looked so easy online! I attempted a similar setup to see the back of my head… and quickly learned I had the coordination of a three-legged puppy. After a few failed attempts, I just accepted I’d be guessing on the back section. I figured, How bad could it be?

The First Snip Commitment Level: Extreme

I decided to start with a light trim. “Just a tiny bit”. I told myself, barely grazing the ends of my hair. But here’s the thing about DIY haircuts: one snip becomes two, and before you know it, you’re fully committed.

I started thinking, “Maybe I should go for a little more shape?” And that’s when I entered the danger zone. I bravely trimmed a bit higher, only to end up with what I can only describe as “the accidental mullet.” Not quite short enough to be edgy, and not quite long enough to hide. A look that screamed, “Did she mean to do that?”

Layers! Because Why Not?

After the mullet moment, I figured layers might balance things out. I watched a tutorial for a “DIY layered look” where the stylist said to gather all the hair on top of the head and snip across the ends. Easy, right? Wrong!

Once I let my hair down, I had the classic “shag” look… but not the cool, textured kind. It was more like a lopsided pyramid. Imagine my horror as I realized that, from certain angles, I looked like a 1980s rock star. You know the kind, big bangs, lots of volume, and not exactly everyday chic.

The Bangs Debacle: The Bold and the Crooked

So, naturally, I decided to cut bangs. I went for the classic middle-part style, carefully sectioning them out, grabbing my trusty scissors, and… immediately going too short. They bounced up, proud and slightly crooked. I tried to even them out, but each “correction” only took me deeper into the rabbit hole. By the end, I had micro-bangs, a look I wasn’t exactly prepared for.

Have you ever tried bangs? Or fixed them yourself? If you’re like me, you probably ended up with “confidently uneven” fringes that scream “DIY disaster with flair.”

The “Fix It with Styling” Phase

In the end, I thought, “I’ll style it, and no one will notice.” So, I plugged in my straightener and flat ironed everything down. The result? A helmet-like effect that highlighted each unintended layer and my choppy bangs. So I tried the opposite approach and curled it. A move that transformed me into an amateur impersonation of 80s rock fashion (again) but with even more volume.

I ended up hiding my work in hats and updos for a solid week.

Lessons Learned (Sort Of)

As hilarious as the experience was, I did learn a few things:

  • Start way smaller than you think. One wrong snip can turn a slight trim into a style overhaul.

  • Bangs are best left to the pros. (If you’re brave enough to try, I salute you.)

  • You really can style away some mistakes… unless, of course, you’re me.

So, to my fellow DIY-ers: have you ever given yourself a haircut? Any disasters or triumphs to share? And if you’ve got some pro tips, please send them my way before I’m tempted to pick up the scissors again!
